It’s here! My 4th, and most anticipated, rattle pattern! Emma the fox is a modification of my paid pattern, Emmet the Fox. Named after my oldest son. When I made a girl version of his fox pattern, he immediately told me that her name needs to me Emma. I couldn’t agree more! His little smile of pride, every time I show him that someone made the fox pattern warms my heart! We can’t wait to see your rattles!
As always, a huge thank you to my wonderful testers.
Happy Crocheting, from Emmet and I!
***Please read through entire pattern before beginning***
Pattern is in US terminology
Rnd – round
chX – chain X amount of stitches
MR – magic adjustable ring (If you need explanation, there are a ton of free videos available on YouTube)
st(s) – stitch(es)
sl st – slip stitch
sc – single crochet
dec – sc2tog (you may also use an invisible decrease, more popular in amigurumi, I have a video example available on my Instagram feed.)
inc – 2 sc in same stitch
F/O – Fasten off.
You will need to add your rattle insert into the center of the fox head before closing. Remember that safety is first! These are designed for our sweet babes to enjoy, so please make sure you are using baby safe items. Always include notes for choking hazards when using small parts.
- Emmet head and ears from the Emmet the Fox Comforter Pattern available in my Etsy/Ravelry shops.
- 2.75mm crochet hook
- 3.75mm crochet hook
- Stitch marker
- Yarn needle
- 70mm or 72mm baby safe wooden/silicone ring. I bought mine from Hobbii
- Rattle insert – I would recommend these from Amazon
- Small amount of Fox yarn colors.
- Small amount of fiberfill, or your choice of stuffing
Yarn I am using for this example is Scheepjes Stonewashed in Morganite, Moonstone, Boulder Opal and Larimar.
Fabric around ring
Starting with Morganite and a 3.75mm hook
1. Sc in second ch from hook, and in the next 17 ch st (18) do not ch 1, turn
2-6. 18 sc across, do not ch 1 at the turn. F/O and leave 8 in tail.
This is meant to be a snug fit around your ring without stretching the stitches, you may need to adjust the number of rows, depending on the thickness of your ring. Sew animal head to center of this fabric, using the tail from the end of your fox head. Use straight pins to hold it in place. Then sew closed, around the ring, with a whip stitch. Seam should be on the inside of the ring. Sew in ends.
Starting in Moonstone
Rnd 1: 6 sc in a MR
Rnd 2: 1 sc in each st (6)
Rnd 3: [1 sc, inc] x 3 (9)
Rnd 4: 1 sc in each st (9)
Rnd 5: [2 sc, inc] x 3 (12)
Rnd 6: Change colors from Moonstone to Morganite between each stitch. Start the first stitch in Morganite, the last stitch will be Moonstone. [1sc, inc] x 6 (18)
Change to Morganite
Rnd 7-13: 1 sc in each st (18)
Rnd 14: [4 sc, dec] x 3 (15)
Rnd 15: 1 sc in each st (15)
Rnd 16: [3sc, dec] x 3 (12)
Begin stuffing. Stuff until the last round.
Rnd 17: [2 sc, dec] x 3 (9)
Rnd 18: 1 sc in each st (9)
Rnd 19: [1sc, dec] x 3 (6)
Rnd 20: Fold in half, 3 sc across both sides to close the tail. F/O and leave 6 in tail. Sew to center of tail fabric before sewing to ring.
Using Morganite and a 3.75mm hook
Row 1: Sc in second ch from hook, and in the next 4 ch (5) do not ch 1, turn
Rows 2-6: 5 sc across, do not ch 1 at the turn. F/O and leave 6 in tail.
Using Larimar and a 2.75mm hook
Row 1: Sc in second ch from hook, and in the next 2 ch, ch 1, skip 1, 3 sc, do not ch 1, turn
Rows 2-3: 3 sc, ch 1, skip, 3 sc, do not ch 1, turn
F/O and leave 6 in tail for sewing to head. The ch1 spaces are there to help pinch the center of the bow.
Center of Bow
Ch 3, yarn over and pull through. F/O Pinch the bow together and tie around the center, hiding the tails in the back. Sew the bow to the head and one of the ears. Hide tails in head, snip excess yarn.
